A Vu Lan Season Remembered
English version by NGUYỄN HỮU LÝ
I remember the Vu Lan festival
Formerly in a full-moon day
Following Mother to Pagoda in yellow robe
My sister celebrated together the festival
Fuming incense smoke spread largely over the Buddha altar
Where stood venerably the Buddha statue with its extreme divine Mercy
And my sister and Mother knelt down and prostrated
I ran back over the past never-forgotten memories
Years of age piled up in the course of time
The Vu Lan season had already come this year
White clouds were wandering over the plain sky
As no more yellow robe since the homeland had been distant
How do I recall it bitterly by nostalgia?
Eternally in my mind, the Mercy Buddha
Through many ebb and flow eventful changes
Does the old pagoda still remain any festival, now?
I missed tenderly my sister before
Beside Mother in yellow robe, with a betel box in hands
I felt myself stirred in desertedness
It seemed that Heaven has recollected itself
And clouds have stopped flying
The bell ringing echoed in the Western Mount
Sending prayers all over the empty space.
