Confidences to Mom
English version by LY HUU NGUYEN
A devotion-scented motherland
Gave birth to Mom, as good-natured as a lump of earth
In wartime
Mom left her village and far away Thi Lai Ha Mat
And quit her lifelong weaving career
At her silk-producing native land that was formerly as elegant as an ancient Tang Dynasty verse
What sins happened on her, when the cocoon snapped off its silken threads
In her girlhood, she grew up in the time of warfare
Choking in her heart, somebody who chanted the heave-ho
Or shouted at the “hut game” that resounded so long the echo until the next morning
Pity for her “Second Poverty” card with a poor fate
While the three-month rice was waiting for the rain to burst into bloom
The south-eastern wind blew very lightly to welcome the sea-fish time
At every early dawn, while going to the field, a skylark was appearing
In the twilight, while carrying back firewoods, a sparrow roaring over the mount
Despite dire poverty for years, her feeling versus duty was perfectly arranged
Mom’s heart covered my whole life with a fresh shade
Both of our hairs turned grey, sixty years afterward
One who was living in a foreign country, and another in her homeland
In the beginning of spring, birds twittered in my back yard
Bewildered, I contemplated the clouds on all directions
The echo was still resounding from the distant native land
A homeland that vibrated intensely by the Thu river wind
Very vaguely, leaves bounced back in the foggy early evening
Someone’s song that was like Mom’s lullaby
I was so happy, and I wept as I did before in my tender youth
I drank conversely my tears into my heart to deepen my feelings
