Ta ngược đời choáng ngợp nắng tự do
A sudden longing return
English version by NGUYỄN HỮU LÝ
I had assumed my life was in peace and happiness
Little did I know that longing could suddenly return
The blue bird could not maintain its blue color anymore
The yellow bird was turning in its brown hue now
The bygone passion stepped back to the past
I was miserably dragging on under the somber sky
I remained motionless to watch the whole world's ebbs and flows
To look for a magpie's river crossing at that past time
To stare at her, in her first appearance
The long-ago days when my parents passed away
Former friends scattered throughout the world
Birds in woods sang the sorriest songs
Fishes in rivers lived quietly for a time
Sunny mornings and rainy evenings as time flew away day after day
So much homesickness suffered amazingly late at night
So much melancholy awaited at the rear porch
In a parting afternoon when the motoring on the road climbs
I felt eccentric under the dazzling sun of freedom
Could it be that if you did not cross the ferry?
Your happy wedding would not change into floods of tears
And the bird would not fly towards Hue city
In sentimentally breaking up by nostalgia
I was correct to worry about existence and to forget love, wasn't it?
I have been half-death in a remote country
I have been also finished all dreams in my tender youth
I loved my homeland as I did for my sweet mother
Later on when the ferry-boat will see the magpie off again
To cross the river and go back to homeland
I'll bow down and pray for my parents' soul
In an ancestral cult!
What's happening! I shed tears!
