My Mother's Village
English version by NGUYEN HUU LY
When my mother was still alive I usually return to visit my mother s village
In anniversaries and festivals, or in New Year opportunities
My maternal grand-mother's house was nearby the Vine Dine Citadel
And it was faced Mr. Tran Cao Van's
My maternal grand-father was certain to play at bowls,
Shoot the marbles, and play hide-and-seek game in the time and with Mr. Tran.
My mother said that her village was so tiny as a pocket
To stick hands in it and just be in touch with kiths and kins
In every anniversary,/ when I returned and climbed up the jack-fruit tree
I plucked off its old leaves to practice how to make hats for fun
My brother and sister were also still in their childhood
My sister looked out for budding fruits to strip a tree
My brother climbed up to make a reach for the sky
The war situation followed my mother's death
Vinh Dien was progressing, but all in a sudden it was checked, movingly
The rifles "Garant M.1" appeared vaguely and were ready to snip at the enemies, undecidedly
In growing up I consented to be away from home in undertaking my trade
My distressed mother's village grew in the background
Occasionally, I foolishly missed Vinh Dien
I span myself round to catch at its shadow but everything was in vain
Oh, my dear cousins Nhut and Dan..., my uncles kids
Would you mind helping me incense some joss ticks
In their emanated fuming as far as the eye can see from thousands of miles away
Perhaps I could meet there with my entire beloved people
And Vinh Dien, be enthusiastic in renovation,
Starting from its bridge to the crossroad toward Hoi An
Every speck of dusk has been closely linked to every epoch of my times past
I have always believed that Vinh Dien would be proud in the morrow
