Hai Pho, My Homeland
English version by NGUYEN HUU LY
I still dream of a returning day to Hai Pho
My homeland situated in the Pacific Ocean side
Its inhabitants eternally led a hard life
They only expected a peaceful existence
I'll get off at Pho Hoi bus station
To stop at an inn across the street to drink green tea
And look for the welkin in olden times
Days of my youth with so many unrealized dreams
I'll see the Japanese Bridge
And temporarily stop there a moment remembering my infancy
My mother led me by my hand to kindergarten
Oh, Lai Vien Kieu, years of far-away
I'll come to An Hoi Bridge edge
To long for falling stars in the sky line
The stars were falling in every hope
In my teenage at bewildering nights
I'll visit the Dai Estuary in a late afternoon
Oysters displayed themselves on the sandy beach in rolling years
The rolls of the sea long years ago will come again
Oh, memories, how much do I love just to be right?
I'll come to cheering pine forests
To release my soul following drifting clouds
My sorrowful living course was always rocked by gusts of wind
Years of my adventurous dreams had already been passed through
My house was certainly covered with green moss
My mother stayed somewhere beside the dark and sad window
I still remembered my arriving at the front gate
My mother's eyes were filling of pleasures
Some few years back, my mother under her restful grave
Life in a foreign land has never disconnected me from my root
I have been cold in snowy countries many winter times
But it cannot be as chilly as a place where my mother rests
