Cau Lau, On My Returning Day
ENGLISH VERSION BY NGUYEN HUU LY
My departure in olden days looks like a bird wing thirsting for wind
Although heaven is immense, it seems very close
My returning day brings back a snapping wing, weary knees and stiff legs
My soul feels tottery, Earth and Heaven are rather cramped
I’m ignorant of where I can stop off even in my olden native land
I find hopelessly neither the trail of azured smoke
Nor the cackle of hens at the thatch cottage
Not a smell of the well-done rice pot
My family’s garden was seized by invaders, so my maternal grandmother had to evacuate away
“Liberation” troops’ arrival brought about here a sky of disorders
The past war was over
Why did the heart-break still hang around here?
I take my stand on the bridge eyeing red clouds on the sky-line
In the other river bank whereat my childhood memories have vanished their traces
It is in vain for me to find out Dong Ban, Cam Lau,
As well as Thi Nhon, Phu Loc which have had a changing name
I stand up right here with my soul down at near sunset
To bewail my lot like a sunken boat
I didn’t return yet as a successful examinee dressed in brocade’s welcome in my old village
What’s the use to show off my prisoner’s clothes now
Circumstances have altered things, also human beings have split up
Formerly, I went to safeguard my country,
Whereas I became a traitor nowadays
People who feared for calamity applauded invaders
I was a criminal who seemed to be forgiving...
