The White Flower Was
No Longer Fastened
on the Purple Gown
English ver. by Nguyen Huu Ly
I have not returned to visit the catholic hamlet for a long time
Since my native land burst into flames by the war
Bomb smoke blanketed the old horizon
Even engulfed tender people who loved their church roof-tops
When you still went to school ten years ago
The purple gown embellished your girl student’s life
A white flower, fastened gracefully on your purple gown
Announced that you were a chaste maiden at puberty
I became acquainted with you through our immediate neighborliness
The school front gate faced the church steeple
Every Sunday, while you went to Mass
I reviewed my lessons at the school front gate
At that time, as kind as a lamb and as timid as a rabbit
I coyly hid myself beside the church steeple
To listen attentively to your soft murmurings of prayers
I paced back and forth in waiting for you at the church entrance hall
After every Mass, when the church bell stopped ringing
A couple of shadows walked home together
Shyly, you prayed in murmurs
Timidly, I was always afraid to prolong the walk
After more then ten years, I quit school
The school bell sobbed loudly at our separation
Periodically, the church bell rang noisily
To send off the purple-dressed girl who got married!
When I stared at your wedding gown, I believed it
as a mourning apparel which shrouds tightly my heart-felt grief!
A white flower was no more fastened on the purple gown
What’s the use of keeping such a prime souvenir?
You rode in the wedding car to your husband’s family
Although you were separated by rivers and ferries
I still remember the resounding image of your purple-dressed age
So I still cherished our platonic love in my mind
Since the invaders engaged in mopping-up operations in that catholic church
I was a fighter defending the country
I guarded the purple gown as well as the white flower colors
I also guarded the old school and the church roof-top
The enemies occupied the bell tower to set a machine-gun nest
Their gun rolled, quivered, and dilapidated walls of the church collapsed
I gathered up all broken bricks to fix damaged walls
I recaptured the bell tower from the enemies and killed them
And then, that fellow-follower
Proudly sacrified his life to the country
The church bell tolled an evening sad farewell
And I saw him off beyond the church front gate
A white flower was no more fastened on the purple gown
But it was pinned up right on his coffin cover
To adorn his brilliant feats of arms with white flowers
These pupil age’s flowers gorgeously fresh flowers have faded away
The hearse was tucked away behind the human world
The church bell tolls wept and shed bitter tears on his last eternal farewell
Henceforth, my hair hanging down on my gauze turban
I pinned up white flowers on that former man’s grave
