Mom was Still
Awaiting the Spring
English Version by NGUYỄN HỮU LÝ
Mom’s letter sent to her beloved children
In alien land, from North America to West Europe
Blue inked lines that are like effective medications
To alleviate all sufferings in this human world
Mom was weak in her twilight old age
For my love, Mom made efforts in her footsteps
From Montreal to California
Mom was a great ocean for river confluence
Mom was the sunshine for laughing flowers vividly blooming
Mom was a tree spreading widely its shade for my life
Mom was the rain for juicy fruits becoming perfectly round
Mom was a wind for my boat splitting waves
Mom was as generous as long rivers and wide seas
On her wide forehead appeared vaguely the native welkin
Lovely eyes brightened up the sworn moonlight
Gentle expressions poured sweetly comfort into my ears
During my past half-life
My hair was turning speckledly with dews
I was still longing for a lullaby forever
Long ago, I had lost the lulling voice of “ah, eh”
The vegetation soul was also drying up alike pebble and gravel
The adieu moment sounded stirring in my heart
Summer was not fading away yet
Why did it seem to enter already into autumn?
Far-off chain of mountains where hung out mist and fog
The sky was dusky spreading with grief-stricken clouds
I went down to South and Mom up to North
Two different living plights, two different parting points of intersection
I returned as time went back and forth
Mom was there, in her old-age loneliness
The winter was coming and overflowing with frosty snow
Nostalgia gnawed at my lonesome soul
For her kids, Mom was still awaiting the spring
To bring summer in the pleasure of meeting again
If the great blue ocean should stop lapping its waves
And Mom shall cease from burdening for my sake...
